The Advantages of Using HDPE and the Particularities of PVC
Even though we are well aware of the dangers that plastic holds for the environment (being non-biodegradable), the advantages of using plastic materials cannot be ignored. It should be stated from the very beginning that one of these advantages is the ease with which PVC and other plastic materials can be recycled and thus reused indefinitely.
Without any doubt, perhaps the most important factor when making an investment is the quality-price ratio. More and more manufacturers choose to provide low-budget merchandise made out of plastic instead of metal or other more expensive materials, therefore providing a larger variety of products for different individuals.
If we are to talk about technical particularities and usage, HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is perhaps the most commonly used plastic material due to its high resistance values and low costs. It is one of the safest materials that can be used for food storing, being approved by all the major heath federations to be used in direct contact with nutrients. High Density Polyethylene has also proved to have great chemical resistance, therefore being frequently used in the manufacturing of industrial trays and tanks. Other uses include pipe fittings, wear plates, hinges and cutting boards.
Even though HDPE has numerous applications, the most important one remains its use in the manufacturing of bottles and other hollow goods. In pyrotechnics, HDPE mortars are usually preferred to their steel or PVC counterparts due to their durability and the fact that they are overall safer to use.
PVC is another type of plastic that is very popular (it is the third most widely produced plastic in the world). Being mostly used in construction due to its durability and low costs, it can be found in pipers, cables, signs, furniture etc. To make it suitable for this large variety of uses, PVC is treated with a large number of additives such as: heat stabilizers, UV stabilizers, lubricants, plasticizers, processing aids, impact modifiers, thermal modifiers, fillers, flame retardants, biocides, blowing agents and smoke suppressors, and even pigments.
If we are to consider the health hazards of HDPE and PVC (which can both be found at Agro), at the present moment the manufacturing processes required to produce the two materials is highly safe, the resulted products being not only safe to use, but also recommended (unlike VCM for example).
In conclusion, even though plastic is not the most environmental friendly material, HDPE and PVC are two plastic compounds that have proven to have a lot more advantages than disadvantages.
