Hybrid Seeds as The Future of Agriculture
The rise in population and with it the ever increasing demand for food, has created the need for better productivity. If the demand and supply balance is to be maintained, better means of production should be made available to the agriculture industry. This increasing demand for food and better means of production, lead to the introduction of Hybrid Seeds (cross pollinated seeds).
Even the early market analysis of the agriculture industry (after the introduction of hybrid seeds), suggested that hybrid seeds produce a much bigger and a much better crop yield than the average seeds. They took over agricultural production in the mid of 20th century itself, these seeds revolutionized agriculture and the idea of production. Though, today hybrid seeds are yesterday's talk, an element of the past, or just 'gone-bys'; these seeds did come a long way, they've changed the face of production and have provided farmers with great benefits for their produce.
The current market trends and the situation of the world's agro industry are not as pretty as one would imagine after such a revolution; the world is starving. Agricultural productions have gone down, developed countries are dependent on export, the developing countries are busy running the manufacturing race, and the under developed nations are dying. World hunger is not a theory anymore, it is an issue of present and it is pressing one. With thousands of children dying in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan famines, it's a wonder why the world is still mum about the wide spreading food insecurity and the huge gap that has been developed in the demand-supply chain.
An answer to the rise in food insecurity is better production, not only for the big-shot plantation owners, but also the small scale average farmers who struggle to keep their produce alive. Hybrid seeds are a solution to that problem; since, a plantation owner, a farmland owner or a small vegetable farmer, can all afford to buy them. Unlike heavy machinery and technical subtleties these seeds are basic and easy to use, hence, be it an educated producer or an uneducated worker, everyone knows how to push a seed in the soil and water it.
This impending situation of world hunger is bringing hybrid seeds to the forefront of mass production again. Industry analysis experts believe that if agriculture is to keep providing food for all the people in the world, then agriculture should be looked upon as manufacturing industry, and should be treated like that as well.
Almond farmers in California, are developing trends of 'smart farming', they use special hybrid seeds and plant moisture sensors along with them in their fields; almond being a thirsty plant takes up a lot of water (the hybrid seeds provide for some more), so these sensors catch the moisture readings and send it to a computer, which then sends commands to the sprinkler. Finally the sprinkler delivers only the required amount of water, no more-no less. Business research in California suggested that measures like using hybrid seeds, introducing drip irrigation and other 'smart farming' tools, have enabled these almond farmers to use 20% less water and increased their yields by 30%.
The situation today, is that of impending doom and Hybrid seeds can be the silver lining that could provide agro-industry its much awaited redemption.
